The growing Bangkok Airport

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is the 7th busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger numbers with over 19 million passengers passing through the airport between January and April 2012. It’s still a good way behind the top spot held by Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport but Suvarnabhumi is growing and with expansion plans that include a new domestic terminal and satellite terminal, as well as additional runways, the airport is expected to host up to 60 million on an annual basis by 2018.

Why is it such a thriving hub? Bangkok is ideally located in the Far East. Not only is it a culturally diverse city, it is also the entry point for many holidaymakers and backpackers, looking for sunshine. British Airways and Qantas even use the airport as a stopover point between Europe and Australasia. Added to this is Thailand’s most prominent airline, Thai Airways International, which travels to 5 of the world’s continents and offers the only direct flight from Bangkok to North America, the Bangkok to Los Angeles route. Bangkok Airways is another growing airline out of the airport which serves destinations in India, Maldives and other areas of Asia and Thailand.

But it’s the remaining airlines of the world that really bring in the traffic. Bangkok and Thailand is one of the most popular long-haul destinations for European holiday-makers who often visit the capital before heading on to one of Thailand’s sought after beaches. From Air France to Finnair, most European carriers offer direct flights to Bangkok. Similarly with Asia, the majority of the airlines in the Far East also serve this hub airport. The Middle Eastern airlines are also getting in on the act allowing indirect flights from the world’s continents to Bangkok.

If you haven’t been, make sure you go as it’s an amazing city and with so many airlines offering flights to Bangkok, you are spoilt for choice on your way to go.
